How to Get a Live Scan

State-by-state guide

  • If you are in California, you will need a Request for Live Scan Form. Live Scan service providers in California cannot submit your Live Scan transaction without this form; we would highly recommend that you contact your employer or requesting agency to get a copy of this form. We have provided a list of these forms here. However, we are not responsible if you choose the wrong form.
  • If you are in Florida, you will need to get an ORI number from your employer or requesting agency. Once you have an ORI number, you can walk-in or schedule an appointment with any of our locations listed in Florida. All Live Scan submissions are transmitted to the Florida Department of Law Enforcement (FDLE) or ACHA based on the ORI number that you provide us.
  • If you are looking for an FBI background check, you will need to take your physical fingerprints on a traditional ink fingerprint card (FD-258). You will then need to mail this fingerprint card along with the FBI Criminal Report Request to our central facility for processing and submission to the FBI. The FBI will then run a background check using your ink fingerprint card, and an FBI report will be sent to you via USPS First Class, Priority Mail, or FedEx based on your selection.

Finding a location

We offer a nationwide directory of fingerprinting service providers. However, our Certifix locations are only available in California and Florida.

  • In California, you will have the option to either walk into the location, schedule an appointment, or enroll online. The online enrollment speeds up the Live Scan process and allows you to input all of your information and pay for the service online. After you’ve paid, you are given a Token that can be used at participating locations throughout California.
  • In Florida, you can either walk into one of our locations with your ORI number or enroll online and schedule an appointment. The online enrollment process allows you to input all of your information and pay for the Live Scan service online; you are given an Order ID and access to an appointment scheduling system once you’ve paid.
  • For the FBI background checks, you can search for any location on our website, including law enforcement agencies. Once you’ve found a location, we recommend that you call them ahead of time to ensure they can offer the ink card fingerprinting service. Once you’ve confirmed, you can walk into the location; they will roll your fingerprints onto an ink fingerprint card. You can download this card online or purchase it from our online store; we recommend the hard cards from our online store.

Getting fingerprinted

The actual fingerprinting process will happen on either a fingerprint scanner or an ink fingerprint card.

  • In California, you will only be able to submit your fingerprints via Live Scan. The operator at the location will have a fingerprint scanner which will allow them you scan your fingerprints. The operator will type in your information into the Live Scan system to collect payment and capture your fingerprints.
  • In Florida, you will have the option to submit your fingerprints via Live Scan, the fastest option. The operator will type in your ORI number and all of your information into the Live Scan system and then collect payment and capture your fingerprints.
  • For the FBI background checks, you will need to have your prints rolled onto the ink fingerprint card. This is only available at select locations, so you will need to confirm ahead of time before you walk in. The operator will have an ink pad to roll your fingerprints onto an ink fingerprint card (FD-258). Once you’ve gotten your fingerprint card completed, you’ll need to mail the card along with your FBI Criminal Report Request to our central processing facility so that we can process and submit it to the FBI.
