Do I Need an FBI Background Check for Mexico?

test

It depends on the type of immigration process.

U.S. citizens applying for residency or certain immigration-related processes in Mexico may be asked to submit an FBI fingerprint-based background check, also known as an FBI Identity History Summary. However, an FBI background check is not required for all applicants and is often not requested for initial Temporary Resident visa applications, particularly those based on financial solvency.

Whether it is required depends on the type of residency, the location of the application, and the Mexican consulate or immigration office handling the case.

When It May Be Required (Apostille, Translation, Validity)

An FBI background check may be requested for Permanent Resident applications, changes of immigration status within Mexico, certain employment or regulated activities, or when specifically requested by a Mexican consulate or the National Immigration Institute (INM).

If required, Mexico is a member of the Hague Apostille Convention, which means the FBI background check must be apostilled by the U.S. Department of State. An FBI background check without an apostille is generally not accepted.

Some Mexican authorities may require the document to be translated into Spanish. When required, translations are typically completed after the apostille and may need to be certified. Requirements can vary by consulate or immigration office.

Mexican authorities commonly require the FBI background check to be issued within 90 days when requested, though this may vary depending on the immigration process and location.
